Institute of Biomedical and Health Engineering (IBHE) is one of the key research divisions of Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences. Its establishment has gained substantial supports from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shenzhen Municipal Government, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. IBHE is dedicated to develop innovative low-cost, miniaturized, integrated, networked, digitalized and smart (MINDS) medical instruments. It aims at becoming an international flagship research, development and personnel training platform in biomedical and health engineering, fostering the breakthrough in selected strategic areas including personalized medicine, biomedical imaging, nano medicine, wearable medical devices and body sensor networks, etc., stimulating the modernization of clinical medicine, and facilitating the excitingly fast growing of medical device industry. IBHE explores the solutions for existing serious healthcare problems threatened by hypertension, heart attack, cancer and other diseases, global ageing population, and escalating healthcare costs, and provides vast opportunities and great benefits for better healthcare of mankind.
IBHE attracts worldwide reputed research scientists in the area of biomedical and health engineering, jointly appointed by Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology Chinese Academy of Sciences and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. The research activities in IBHE are dedicated to selected strategic areas by its seven Research Centres, including Paul C. Lauterbur Research Centre for Biomedical Imaging (China’s first research center named after a Nobel Laureate), Research Centre for Biomedical Information Technology, CAS/CUHK Research Centre for Biosensors and Medical Instruments, Research Centre for Medical Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery Devices, Research Centre for NanoMedicine and NanoBiotechnology, Research Centre for Neural Engineering, and Research Centre for Low-cost Healthcare Technologies.

The Key laboratory will be directed along one research field, “Biomedical Informatics”, two research themes,“Biosensing” and “Biomedical Imaging”, and three fundamental research topics, “Biomedical Information Transportation Mechanism”, “High-quality Biomedical Information Characterization”, and “Biomedical Information
The active researches include 1) micro-CT technology, 2) micro-CTT imaging system, and 3) non-contact ECG monitoring bed sheet.
