--An innovative national research institute committed to internationalization and industrialization
As a branch of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) in Southern China, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) was jointly established by Chinese Academy of Science, Shenzhen municipal government and Chinese University of Hong Kong in Feb, 2006.
Knowledge-application oriented, SIAT set up its mission as: Enhancing the innovative creation capability of modern equipment manufacturing and service industries in the region of Guangdong & Hong Kong, Promoting the development of emerging industries with self-owned Intellectual Property and aiming to be an International Top-class Industrial Research Institute.
As a very young and dynamic institute, SIAT engages in comprehensive and multi-disciplinary researches in several divisions. Now it is composed of "Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Integration Technology" (SIIT); "Institute of Biomedical and Health Engineering" (IBHE); "Institute of Advanced Computing and Digital Engineering" (IACDE); "Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology(IBB)" and "Guangzhou Institute of Advanced Technology(GIAT)". It has the National Engineering Laboratory of Biomedical informatics &healthcare and the National Engineering Laboratory of High-density integrated circuit packaging technology, 5 key labs and platforms of Guangdong Province, as well as 18 key labs and platforms of Shenzhen.
In its short history, SIAT has made significant achievements in human resource development, academic researches and commercializing technologies. The team of SIAT has dramatically grown up from 5 in March, 2006 to 1529 at the end of 2011 and the staff is 918, including13 IEEE Fellow, 2 CAS Academician, 12 talents in National one thousand plan, 3 leading Scientists of Guangdong, 341 talents with PHD degree and 224 of them with overseas studying/working experience. 18 young researchers joined in SIAT through the CAS "Hundred Talents Project" sponsored by State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs (SAFEA) and CAS.
To meet the national needs in healthcare and manufacturing, SIAT set its orientation towards the emerging industries of “low-cost healthcare”, “service robot”, “electric vehicle”, ”cloud computing”, “digital city”, ”Nano Medicine” ”new energy” and “new materials”. Regarding to industry cooperation, SIAT has established concrete partnership with more than 500 firms including Huawei, Midea, CIMC and etc, attracted over 80 million RMB investments from industries, and incubated 60 high-technology companies.
In a broad range of research areas, SIAT has established long-term international cooperation with foreign academic and research institutions, including Stanford University(USA),National Information & Communication Technology (Australia), TRlabs (Canada), Hamburger University (Germany), University of Southampton (UK) and many other institutions.
