He received his B. S. Degree in Electromagnetic Measurement and Instrumentation from Hunan University in June 1984, M.S. Degree in Automation Theory and Its Applications from Harbin Institute of Technology in December 1986, and Ph.D. Degree in Industrial Automation from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in August 1990, respectively.

He served as lecturer, associate professor, and professor with the First Military Medical University from September 1990 to May 1996, and was a guest scientist and postdoctoral fellow with University of Bern, Switzerland from June 1996 to March 2000. From April 2000 to March 2007, he served as associate member, member and senior scientist with Biomedical Imaging Lab, Agency of Science, Technology and Research of Singapore. After that, he joined Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

He is a distinguished professor of Shenzhen in Pattern Recognition and Intelligence System in 2010. He proposed an images segmentation framework based on prior knowledge, and has developed several robust image analysis systems utilized clinically, especially on the computer-aided system for stroke, which has already been deployed to national clinical and international cooperation institutions. He has published more than 150 papers including Lancet, filed more than 20 international patents, won merit award of Annual Meeting of Radiological Society of North America 3 times, Magna Cum Laude Award of the American Society of Neuroradiology 1 time, scientific and technological progress award of the People’s Liberation Army twice, and national invention award 4th prize 1 time. His major research areas are: image analysis, computer-aided diagnoses and therapy, computer vision, and pattern recognition.
