Pervasive sensing facilitated by Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) technologies offers the integration of modern technology into daily routine. The smart sensing approach offers the ability to sense ambient parameters and the use of different objects in the urban environment. Identification and monitoring technologies, WSNs, wireless communication protocols and dispersed intelligence for objects are primitive elements of a smart environmental solution. The term Internet Sensing is used to describe embedded sensing devices with Internet connectivity, allowing them to interact with each other, services, and people on a global scale. This level of connectivity can increase reliability, sustainability, and efficiency by improved access to information. Environmental monitoring, home and building automation, and smart grids could be interconnected, allowing information to be shared between systems. The WSNs with the application of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cloud computing are producing smart home solutions. The present research work aims to develop smart home and building solutions based on IoT and cloud computing. The research work recorded recent practical challenges and limitations encountered while designing the IoT-based smart environment. Therefore, research IoT idea, through the conjunction of WSNs, the Internet and distributed computing with data mining and machine learning, as an approach to apply in smart homes can be innovative solution to benefit humankind. Additionally, smart homes based on WSN protocols are used to provide an assisted living environment to humans. The currently reported smart home systems based on generalized WSN protocols suffer from complexity, large data handling, and data transmission delay. Hence, novel research is much needed to develop a simple and efficient WSN protocol which offers less delay and can handle large amount of data during data transmission.
