A Holistic Approach for Minimizing Computation/Communication Consumption in Virtualized Environments

According to the pay-per-use model adopted in clouds, the more resources an application running in a cloud computing environment consumes, the greater the amount of money the owner of the corresponding application will be charged. Therefore, applying intelligent solutions to minimize the computation as well as the communication consumption is of great importance in virtualized environments. In this project, they are going to study a holistic approach to solve scheduling problems as well as placement problems in virtualized environments. In the first section of this project, they will approach the problem of interval scheduling problem with bounded parallelism in non-homogeneous environments. By solving the aforementioned problem, the computation consumption of the applications running in virtualized environments will be minimized. As a consequence, the energy spent within a cloud computing environment will be reduced, with cloud providers decreasing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and subsequently increasing the Return on Investment (ROI) of the underlying infrastructures (data centers and large-scale cluster farms). In the second section, they will approach the problem of moving data to compute or compute to data. This has become a fundamental problem that bedevils the research community the last years. Lastly, in second section, they will develop online solutions adapting the placements of virtual machines according to the dynamics of the underlying systems.
